Speaking
I love speaking to different audiences, and I can talk about a variety of subjects. I will travel just about anywhere to speak. In the last ten years, I have spoken at conferences, meetings, and other special events in:
- New Zealand
- Israel
- Denmark
- Germany
- Australia
- And, of course, various states within the US
“Char is a high-energy, funny, no-nonsense, engaging speaker who imparted about a gigabyte of information about wikis and how to make them more useful in business, including tips on creating a “how to” page to encourage people to use your wiki. She would make a wonderful keynote speaker at your next chapter meeting or banquet, and a lively podcast host or guest.”
Matt Abe, Technical Publications Manager at MacDermid ColorSpan, after attending Char James-Tanny’s session “Using Wikis for Collaborative Writing” at the STC Technical Communication Summit
If an event is run by a non-profit organization (such as the Society for Technical Communication), I typically do not charge to speak. However, if I am invited to speak to a group, I expect to either receive a stipend or that my expenses will be covered, including airfare or mileage, food, and hotel (if necessary). (If I volunteer to speak, then I pay for my own expenses.)
Someone once told me that their group couldn’t pay for my expenses because they would probably lose money if enough people didn’t attend to cover my costs. While I understand where they’re coming from, I can’t possibly absorb the cost of traveling to all the places that want me to speak. I’m willing to donate my time (including the time I spend traveling and speaking), but the costs related to these trips must be covered.
All for-profit companies are expected to pay a speaker’s fee.
