Asking Char to speak

I will travel just about anywhere to speak. In the last five years, I have spoken at conferences, meetings, and other special events in:

  • New Zealand
  • Israel
  • Denmark
  • Germany
  • Australia
  • And, of course, various states within the US

If an event is run by a non-profit organization (such as the Society for Technical Communication), I typically do not charge to speak. However, if I am invited to speak to a group, I expect that my expenses will be covered, including airfare or mileage, food, and hotel (if necessary). (If I volunteer to speak, then I expect to pay for my own expenses.)

Someone once told me that their group couldn't pay for my expenses because they would probably lose money if enough people didn't attend to cover my costs. While I understand where they're coming from, I can't possibly absorb the cost of travelling to all the places that want me to speak. I'm willing to donate my time (including the time I spend travelling and speaking), but the costs related to these trips must be covered.

All for-profit companies are expected to pay a speaker's fee.

If you have any questions, please contact me.
